Face Make Up
The world of beauty offers a bounty of selection for concealing, enhancing, or shading the features of the face. Facial make up can transform your face from dull and dreary, to alive and dramatic. Or it can simply be used to enhance your natural beauty. However you choose to use your facial make up, here is what you need to know about the products that can help you bring out your inner beauty.
Foundations
Foundations work by evening out skin tone and providing a base for blush and eye make up to adhere to. They are essentially moisturizers with pigment added to give them color. Depending upon the product, foundations may have a matte finish or they may create a shimmering look. The best foundations will also contain an added sunscreen to protect against the sun’s rays.
Choose a natural, chemical free foundation to precisely match your skin type, tone, and coloring. Foundation will look like a painted mask unless it matches your features. If you have normal skin, choose a water-based foundation. People with oily skin should use an oil-free product. And those with dry skin should use an oil based foundation. Those with sensitive skin should look for a foundation made especially for their skin type with no extra dyes or fragrances that could irritate the face.
To test the tone and coloring of foundation, apply a small dab of the product at the base of the jaw line and blend it along the jaw. Don’t test the product on your palms or your wrist…ultimately, it needs to match the skin on your face, so you may as well test it there. Testing the foundation on the jaw line allows you to match the tone and coloring with that on both your face and neck, minimizing the chance of distortion.
Concealers
Concealers are your camouflage for blemishes and other areas that need special attention. Scars, surface flaws, skin irregularities, discolorations, and bruising are all conditions that may benefit from a concealer. These products are similar to foundations, but they are heavier and water resistant, with more pigment per ounce. This allows for better coverage in areas that need it most. They are designed to be worn underneath foundation to improve their masking effect. They may come in either cream or stick form.
Stick concealers are thick and heavy with a high proportion of wax. They provide good coverage, but they may also be too oily for those with oily or acne prone skin. Concealer creams usually come in three base colors: green to cover ruddy skin tones, yellow to correct bluish skin discolorations, and purple to offset a sallow complexion. Creams are typically lighter than sticks and they work well for people with normal, dry, or even sensitive skin. But those with oily or acne prone skin should still use caution.
Blush
Blush, or rouge, adds color, shading, and contours to your face. These products come in cream or powder varieties. As their name suggests, cream blushes contain a thick, creamy base that should be avoided by people with acne prone skin. Powder-based blushes, on the other hand, are oil-absorbent and less likely to cause or aggravate acne.
Eye shadow
Eye shadow is used on the upper eyelid to provide a dash (or two) of color, highlights, and shading. Similar to blush, they may come in cream or powder form. They may have a matte finish or more of a pearlized, shimmering glow. Choose your eye shadow color(s) to compliment your skin, hair, and eye coloring.
Eyeliner
Eyeliner defines the eye area. It can be used to make the eyes appear larger or smaller, or to enhance the coloring of the eyes. They typically come as either a liquid or a pencil. Basic shades, such as black, brown, or gray, work best for day to day face make up. You can alter the drama of your eye make up look by changing the amount of eyeliner applied, or by smudging the liner with a Q-tip.
Mascara
Mascara helps to define the eyes and provide polish to the eyelashes. There are a wide variety of mascaras that are available on the market: lengthening mascaras, thickening mascaras, colored mascaras, and even water-proof mascaras. Each product has its own unique formula and properties. Choose a mascara product based on the your eye make up needs.
